September Cruise and Race to Thetis Island

We hope to see you all at our next cruise, which is on September 18 - 19 at Thetis Island Marina, followed by Sunday afternoon hamburgers and drinks on our clubhouse deck. This event combines a sailboat race to the Thetis pub on Saturday, along with a cruise for power boats and non-racers. A social evening at the pub and marina will follow, with another race and cruise back to Ladysmith on Sunday. The weekend will wrap up with hamburgers and drinks on the clubhouse deck on Sunday afternoon. We estimate that the clubhouse part of the event will start around three pm on Sunday.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you'd like to join us on September 18 and 19.

August Club Cruise - Enjoyable cruise to Pender Island
From Bob Johns

With a couple of last-minute cancellations, we still had ten boats (twenty people) at Otter Bay for our August cruise.

Our plans for Saturday afternoon's appetizer party had to be changed due to the popularity of the Otter Bay view deck with the local wasp population. So we all moved aboard Northern Light--Art and Heather Rendell's welcoming vessel.

On Saturday evening the Otter Bay dining facility was the location of our festivities. Everyone enjoyed a good meal and great company.

Thanks to everyone who came along, it's always a lot more fun when there are plenty of LYC people at these events.

Interclub corn roast at Thetis Island

The annual Interclub Corn Roast organized by the good folks at Nanaimo Yacht Club will take place on the September Labour Day weekend, at the Telegraph Harhour Marina.

Last year, LYC won the trophy for most participation. Get your reservations in to NYC early, and let's win it again!

Cruise to Cowichan Bay on May 14, 15 & 16, 2010

Crabbing lessons
Bob gives crab-handling lessons to Terry, who still keeps his gloves on!
The weather was great, the people were sociable and the club cruise to Cowichan Bay was a lot of fun for those involved. Friday evening was devoted to the preparation of fresh BC spot prawns on our dock. For those interested, several cooking methods were tried, and barbecuing seemed to produce very favouralbe results--although they were all very good. On Saturday, lunchtime was given over to the group preparation of live dungeness crabs on our same section of dock. This involved lessons to crabbing newbies on how to handle and clean fresh crabs. It was a toss-up between Luigi's hatchet method and the more traditional "whack at the edge of the bullrail" system. The crabs were, of course delicious. Twenty people showed up for the group dinner at Schooners Restaurant on Saturday evening. To add a bit more pleasure to the trip, the tides were favourable for trip home on Sunday.
